How to repair a leak under the sink
A leak under the sink can cause a lot of damage, but is usually fairly easy to locate and repair. The water damaging the cabinet or floor can come from the drain pipes, supply hoses, or even the faucet itself. The source is usually apparent once you crawl under the sink with a flashlight. The repair often consists of just tightening a connection, but just as often it can be more complicated.
Assessing the problem
The first indication of a leak is often a cabinet or floor soaked with water, or it may be a pool of standing water. If the leak is coming from a pressurized water hose, a splash is likely to be seen immediately. However, if the leak is coming from a drain line, you may not notice it until you use the sink. In addition, if the problem is a faulty seal around the sink drain, you may need to fill the sink and let the water stand before the leak becomes visible. In most cases, but not always, the leak is directly above the moisture or standing water.
Fixing water leaks in the water supply
Water in faucet supply hoses is under pressure, so it tends to spray or actively drip from loose connections or defective pipes. A common source of dripping is shutoff valves with compression fittings that are not as tight as they should be. The best way to tighten them is to hold the valve with one wrench while turning the compression nut with another. Leaks at faucet connections, which are difficult to tighten because they are in tight spaces behind the sink, are also problematic.
